How To Protect Yourself From
Fraudulent Roofing Contractors?
Unfortunately, there’s a lot of guys in Hawaii who call themselves roofers but don’t even have a proper license. Everyone’s got a buddy or a cousin who’s a roofer, who only works for cash on the weekends. The problem with hiring these types of guys is you may have no legal recourse when your roof leaks and you have leaks or other expensive damages to your home.
Here’s what you want to look for:
Safety
Many roofing companies are NOT COMPLIANT with OSHA regulations. Often their roofers are often not even tied-in to the roof when working in dangerous conditions. This is why they work for cash on the weekends because OSHA government inspectors don’t typically work weekends.
Liability Insurance
What most people don’t know is that if someone falls off your roof and is injured, disabled (or even killed) and the contractor doesn’t have up to date Workman’s Compensation and Liability insurance, YOU COULD BE PERSONALLY LIABLE.
Make sure to check the OSHA records and General Insurance of the company that installs your roof BEFORE they start working! Keep a copy for your files.
Workmans Compensation
Check with the Workers Compensation Board to make sure that they don’t just list one employee. This is very important because there are several contractors in Hawaii who pay their workers cash and don’t claim them on WCB. Here’s the problem with these Hawaii Roofing contractors: They are fraudulently avoiding paying taxes and they are incurring a huge liability. If they are caught, they could be put in jail for fraud.

Hawaii State License
Do a search for the company to ensure their license is valid and current under the name which they represent themselves
https://pvl.ehawaii.gov/pvlsearch/
How long in business with SAME NAME
There are multiple contractors in Hawaii who have a bad record with the BBB or have been sued and shut down their company, then started another company with a similar name. If they are changing their name, it should be a red flag that requires more investigation.

Why Aluminum?

Posted By Peter In Roofing

Deposits of bauxite ore are mined and refined into alumina–one of the feedstocks for aluminum metal. Then alumina and electricity are combined in a cell with a molten electrolyte called cryolite. Direct current electricity is passed from a consumable carbon anode into the cryolite, splitting the aluminum oxide into molten aluminum metal and carbon dioxide. Aluminum came into commercial use during the late 19th century.
Immediately aluminum became known as a “metal of the future” and allowed for crucial developments to occur in the field of aviation and architecture, to name a few. In particular, aluminum allowed metal to be utilized for applications requiring lightness, design versatility, and incredible strength and durability.
Because it is easily recycled, it also meets the tests of environmental responsibility.
As a premier metal, aluminum is our choice as the backbone of The Oceanview Roofing series of products. We are proud to offer this to our customers and know that should you choose our product and services, you will be satisfied with your new roof for many years and decades to come.

Aluminum does not have the limitations of many other conventional roofing materials, which can include rot, splitting, cracking, frequent replacement, and landfill disposal. And, studies have shown that homes using metal roofing are much cooler in the summer and therefore have significantly reduced air-conditioning expenses.
Metal roofing systems are widely used worldwide, and are gaining market share in North America as concerns mount regarding the environment and the use of petrochemicals in traditional “remove and replace” roofing products. Aluminum can be recycled, and is therefore a sustainable and environmentally responsible product.

Roof tiles are ‘hung’ from the framework of a roof by fixing them with nails. The tiles are usually hung in parallel rows, with each row overlapping the row below it to exclude rainwater and to cover the nails that hold the row below. There are also roof tiles for special positions, particularly where the planes of the several pitches meet. They include ridge, hip and valley tiles. These can either be bedded and pointed in cement mortar or mechanically fixed.
Similarly to roof tiling, tiling has been used to provide a protective weather envelope to the sides of timber frame buildings. These are hung on laths nailed to wall timbers, with tiles specially moulded to cover corners and jambs. Often these tiles are shaped at the exposed end to give a decorative effect.
Roofs around the world vary greatly in style, and this means that many different types of roofing tiles are required. But whatever vision architects, designers and home-owners have for their roofing project, Oceanview Roofing has the right tile for the job.
Oceanview Roofing supplies concrete and clay tiles in a wide variety of shapes, surface finishes and colours. Our superior-quality tiles are available with dirt-repellent, heat-reflective and algae-resistant coatings, and offer outstanding aesthetics. They come in single or multiple colours, and can be smooth or textured, with matt or gloss surfaces. And they are available in a wide range of sizes to meet customers´ requirements – our smaller tiles are perfect for renovation as well as restoration projects and stylish new-build houses.

A shake is a basic wooden shingle that is made from split logs. Shakes have traditionally been used for roofing and siding applications around the world. Higher grade shakes are typically used for roofing purposes, while the lower grades are used for siding purposes. In either situation, properly installed shakes provide long lasting weather protection and a rustic aesthetic, though they require more maintenance than some other more modern weatherproofing systems.
The term shake is sometimes used as a colloquialism for all wood shingles, though shingles are sawn rather than split.
In North America shakes are typically made from California redwood (“Sequoia sempervirens”) and Western Red Cedar (Thuja plicata), while in Scandinavia and Central Europe they are more commonly made from pine (Pinus sylvestris). There are various types of shakes, the main differentiating feature between shakes and other types of shingles is that shakes are split while most shingles are sawn on all sides. The sizes also vary from country to country; in North America shakes are usually made in 24-inch lengths – the most common, 18-inch barn shake, or even 48-inch shakes, which are typically used for siding. In Scandinavia shakes, traditionally used only for roofing, are generally smaller than in North America, measuring 13-16 inches long, 4-6 inches wide and 1/8 thick. Likewise wooden shingles are manufactured in differing lengths, in North America, 16-inch, 18-inch and 24 inches.

Two types of asphalt shingles are made: organic and fiberglass or glass fiber. Organic shingles are generally paper (waste paper) saturated with asphalt to make it waterproof, then a top coating of adhesive asphalt is applied and ceramic granules are then embedded. In the case of algae-resistant shingles, a portion of the granules contain leachable paint ceramically coated, designed to protect against discoloration from algae on the roof. This does not protect from moss growth but does slow the growth. Moss feeds on algae and any other debris on the roof. Most manufactures offer a 5- to 10-year warranty against algae growth.
The protective nature of asphalt shingles primarily comes from the long-chain hydrocarbons impregnating the paper. Over time in the hot sun, the hydrocarbons soften and when rain falls the hydrocarbons are gradually washed out of the shingles and down onto the ground[citation needed]. Along eaves and complex rooflines more water is channeled so in these areas the loss occurs more quickly. Eventually the loss of the heavy oils causes the fibers to shrink, exposing the nail heads under the shingle flaps. The shrinkage also breaks up the surface coating of sand adhered to the surface of the paper, and eventually causes the paper to begin to tear itself apart. Once the nail heads are exposed, water running down the roof can seep into the building around the nail shank, resulting in rotting of roof building materials and causing moisture damage to ceilings and paint inside.

Not long ago, it seemed like your only option for roofing materials was asphalt shingles or asphalt shingles. Few other options were available, and if you wanted a different roofing material, you had better be prepared to pay big bucks for it. Standing seam metal roofs were only a figment of the imagination in the minds of the average homeowner no more than 5 or 10 years ago. Most of these roofs were confined to commercial buildings.
One great advantage of standing seam metal roofs is contained in the name itself: seams, the weak point in any roof and a potential entry point for moisture, are raised above the level of the roofing panel.
Because the metal panels run unhindered from the top to the bottom of the roof, not only are there no horizontal seams but in total the roof has a far fewer number of seams.
Yes, metal is tough. But the sheet metal in this type of roofing can certainly be penetrated by falling limbs or dented by a severe hailstorm.
Finally, the look of standing seam roofs lends itself well to certain types of contemporary or country-style houses. Due to the sleek lines, these roofs give your house an “industrial” feeling, yet tempered by a modern flair. These are not the rippled tin roofs that you might remember from warehouses of the past.
